Today’s cheerful assignment: visit a town where the most reliable crowd has straw for hair.

Wanatah gives the scarecrows a weekend shift

Wanatah, Indiana, is hosting its 32nd annual Scarecrow Festival from Friday, September 25, through Sunday, September 27. The festival’s organizers describe a Main Street gathering built around quirky scarecrow displays, crafts, food, music, and family games. That makes this weekend’s civic mood delightfully specific: someone has handed a lot of straw people a social calendar.

The festival’s official page places the action at 245 North Main Street, while a regional radio calendar independently lists the September 25–27 dates and its food, music, and family programming. The event has been a community fixture since 1994, according to the organizers.

Quick smiles from the public-lands calendar

  • Colorado: Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge is holding Refuge Day on September 26 with wildlife activity tables, black-footed ferret and hawk encounters, face painting, and try-it archery. The refuge has assembled an unusually energetic menu for anyone whose weekend needed both a hawk and a craft table.
  • Minnesota: Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge is marking its 50th anniversary on September 26 with birdwatching, archery, arts and crafts, and recognition for its Find Your Wild Nature Art Contest. The art will stay on view through October 25.
