At Green Bluff’s Howl’oween on the Bluff, the corgi race had athletes with very different ideas about the finish line. Some charged ahead, some paused to play, and three-year-old Stubbs took time for pets before completing his run.
The Oct. 4 fall festival at The Farmhouse on Green Bluff in Colbert, Washington, paired the races with a dog costume contest, live music and local vendors. The Farmhouse’s event listing described race heats of three corgis and costume awards for the scariest, funniest and most adorable entries.
A contemporaneous report from The Spokesman-Review followed Stubbs around the track and captured the day’s playful range: five-year-old Vito won his heat, while other corgis treated the course as an invitation to wrestle. In the costume contest, dogs arrived as Harry Potter, Winnie the Pooh, hot dogs and tacos. A golden retriever named Ponyboy wore a student-debt costume and narrowly missed the top spot in the scary category.
The event had a simple winning formula: a race short enough for small paws, an audience ready to cheer, and costumes that turned everyday worries into a Halloween joke. The Farmhouse’s event listing lays out the race and contest format; the newspaper’s on-the-ground account brings the dogs’ Sunday antics to life.
