The State Fair’s Corgi Races Put Short Legs on the Fast Track

The Great New York State Fair has scheduled three daily heats of “The Fast and the Furriest,” giving fairgoers a very good reason to take the long way to the Exposition Center.

There will be no shortage of horsepower at the Great New York State Fair this week, although some of it will be notably closer to the floor. The fair’s official schedule lists “The Fast and the Furriest Corgi Races” at the Exposition Center in Syracuse on Thursday, Aug. 27, with races at 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. The event also appeared on the fair’s Aug. 26 opening-day schedule.

The fair describes the competition as a chance to watch these “adorable dogs” run and invites spectators to pick a favorite. That is an admirably optimistic use of the word run: corgis are compact, enthusiastic, and built close enough to the ground that every sprint comes with its own dramatic change of perspective.

The race is part of the fair’s 2026 grounds entertainment lineup, sponsored by Micron. The official daily schedule places the corgis alongside a full day of farm, food and amusement programming, including the fair’s evening drone shows on its first two nights.

For anyone who has ever watched a dog ignore a perfectly good toy in favor of a paper bag, the format comes with a familiar suspense: which corgi will reach the finish line first, and which one will discover a more interesting destination halfway there?
