Double D’s BBQ Shack gave Pueblo’s Chili & Salsa Showdown a tidy double-D moment: the Pueblo Chieftain reports the team won first place in both commercial red- and green-chile categories at Friday’s awards.
The Greater Pueblo Chamber of Commerce scheduled the live awards ceremony for 6 p.m. on Friday, September 18, at the El Pueblo Museum Stage, after the contest’s Thursday tasting round. The Chieftain’s results recap reports that Double D’s wins came on September 18.
The Chieftain’s recap says 147 entries came from around Colorado. Double D’s BBQ Shack earned both commercial chile titles, while Prime on a Dime took the commercial salsa win. In the home-cook division, Daniel Roybal won red chile, Gary Gomez won green chile, and Katrina Apodaca won salsa.
Contest rules called for certified Pueblo green chiles and blind judging. The Chamber says the awards recognized first-, second- and third-place entries in both commercial and non-commercial rounds, turning Friday evening into a small ceremony with plenty of flavorful homework behind it.
Two chile titles in one night is an efficient haul for a barbecue team. Double D’s left with a red-and-green pairing that sounds ready for its own menu section—and an easy mnemonic for the next cook-off.
