Albuquerque has a particularly charming piece of event logistics this week: people with a patch of usable open land can put a large white X on it to tell balloon pilots that a landing is welcome.
Bernalillo County and the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta announced the 2026 “X Marks the Spot” program on September 17. The program is preparing for the Fiesta’s October 3–11 run, when pilots will be looking for accessible places to land around the metro area.
The signal is wonderfully low-tech: a large white X, displayed where a pilot can see it. The organizers say participating landowners can pick up a marker while supplies last, or make one with a white sheet or similar material. Pilots who land on a marked property will carry cards to collect landowner information, and the event plans a daily landowner prize drawing.
It is the kind of neighborhood cooperation that makes a balloon festival feel delightfully close to the ground. Balloon Fiesta’s own landowner-relations history describes the long-running work of helping pilots recognize friendly landing areas as Albuquerque grows.
