Southend Pier has a perfectly reasonable schedule for a summer Sunday: trains, a long walk over the water, a few live performers—and a crowd invited to become a moving field of red. The pier’s first Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever runs from 1 to 5 p.m. today, with three chances to join the communal dance inspired by Kate Bush’s “Wuthering Heights.”
A promenade plot twist
The first dance is scheduled for 1:15 p.m., followed by live Kate Bush performances, a choir singing “This Woman’s Work,” majorettes, and two more dances. The final round at 4:45 p.m. is deliberately low-pressure: the pier invites families and friends to dance however they like, whether or not they know the routine.
That makes the day less a precision flash mob than a public permission slip to wave one’s arms with commitment. The event page says this is Southend’s first turn in the international tradition, which began in Brighton and has since spread to towns and cities in several countries. Visit Southend also lists the July 26 event at the pier.
Briefly: the red-dress relay
Southend is not dancing alone. At Hay Castle in Wales, a free noon gathering likewise invited anyone to wear red and join in, with no dance experience required. One song, many lawns and piers, a formidable amount of sleeve movement.
