Woodinville, Washington, has found a refreshingly low-stakes way to conduct civic business: ask residents to choose a pet mayor.
Voting in Homeward Pet Adoption Center’s Pet Mayor for a Day contest closes at 5 p.m. Pacific time today, September 11. The nonprofit shelter says the winner will receive an honorary “paw-clamation,” meet Mayor Sarah Arndt and city staff, tour the mayor’s office, and take home a custom yard sign.
An election with excellent candidates
The contest accepts pet photos and votes as donations, with the proceeds supporting Homeward Pet’s sheltering, adoption, veterinary, behavioral, food-bank, and rescue-support work. It is the sort of campaign where a well-timed ear tilt may be more persuasive than a stump speech.
Homeward Pet announced that entries ran from August 27 through September 11, while voting opened September 1. The organization says it will contact the winner by September 14, so the suspense will be brief even if the ceremonial ribbon is not.
