    Woodinville, Washington, has found a refreshingly low-stakes way to conduct civic business: ask residents to choose a pet mayor.

    Voting in Homeward Pet Adoption Center’s Pet Mayor for a Day contest closes at 5 p.m. Pacific time today, September 11. The nonprofit shelter says the winner will receive an honorary “paw-clamation,” meet Mayor Sarah Arndt and city staff, tour the mayor’s office, and take home a custom yard sign.

    An election with excellent candidates

    The contest accepts pet photos and votes as donations, with the proceeds supporting Homeward Pet’s sheltering, adoption, veterinary, behavioral, food-bank, and rescue-support work. It is the sort of campaign where a well-timed ear tilt may be more persuasive than a stump speech.

    Homeward Pet announced that entries ran from August 27 through September 11, while voting opened September 1. The organization says it will contact the winner by September 14, so the suspense will be brief even if the ceremonial ribbon is not.

    A 65-Foot Hot Dog Is Tossing Confetti in Times Square Today

    NEW YORK — Times Square has given the phrase “street food” an aggressively literal upgrade. Times Square Arts says Hot Dog: The Second Serving, a 65-foot public sculpture by Jen Catron and Paul Outlaw, is on view in Duffy Square through August 8. Every day at noon, its hydraulic mechanism lifts the giant frank and sends confetti down onto the plaza.

    The sculpture is free to visit at Broadway between 46th and 47th streets. It is part of the artists’ satirical look at American spectacle, celebration and mythology — a very serious subject being carried by a very unserious-looking bun.

    Last night, the project’s programming included The Most American Pageant Ever!, a free performance in which contestants made their cases for “American-ness.” The official project page lists the July 22 program and the daily noon confetti celebration, so today’s lunchtime visitors can still catch the sculpture’s regularly scheduled flourish.

    Dogs get the splash-pad shift in Jackson

    Jackson County, Michigan, has scheduled its Dog Days of Summer for tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Cascades Splash Pad. The county says dogs are free; people older than three pay $2. The event page promises an evening of splashes and smiles, which is a pretty efficient municipal use of a splash pad.

    Mobile’s Saturday puzzle race had one very serious rule: bring your best table manners

    On Saturday, July 18, teams gathered at the James M. Seals Jr. Community Center in Mobile, Alabama, for the MOB Puzzle Showdown: a family-friendly race to finish identical jigsaw puzzles for trophies, prizes and, in the city’s words, bragging rights.

    The format has a pleasingly specific split. Youth teams of two or three children (with an optional adult coach) were assigned a 350-piece puzzle; adult teams of two to four faced a 500-piece version. That makes this less a quiet afternoon with a cardboard box and more a timed negotiation about whether the blue-green piece is sky, water or someone’s sweater.

    The City of Mobile listed the event for 8:30 a.m. to noon on July 18. A local television report independently described the same two divisions and the race for trophies, prizes and bragging rights. Neither source published results when this edition was prepared, so we are resisting the temptation to invent a champion—or to accuse a missing edge piece of fleeing the scene.

    It is a compact reminder that a good community event can be both low-stakes and intensely competitive. The table may be shared; the final corner piece belongs to whoever sees it first.
