NEW YORK — Times Square has given the phrase “street food” an aggressively literal upgrade. Times Square Arts says Hot Dog: The Second Serving, a 65-foot public sculpture by Jen Catron and Paul Outlaw, is on view in Duffy Square through August 8. Every day at noon, its hydraulic mechanism lifts the giant frank and sends confetti down onto the plaza.
The sculpture is free to visit at Broadway between 46th and 47th streets. It is part of the artists’ satirical look at American spectacle, celebration and mythology — a very serious subject being carried by a very unserious-looking bun.
Last night, the project’s programming included The Most American Pageant Ever!, a free performance in which contestants made their cases for “American-ness.” The official project page lists the July 22 program and the daily noon confetti celebration, so today’s lunchtime visitors can still catch the sculpture’s regularly scheduled flourish.

Dogs get the splash-pad shift in Jackson
Jackson County, Michigan, has scheduled its Dog Days of Summer for tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Cascades Splash Pad. The county says dogs are free; people older than three pay $2. The event page promises an evening of splashes and smiles, which is a pretty efficient municipal use of a splash pad.
