A Bowl of Fricot, a Free Show, and Five Days of Acadian Fun

Today’s bright spot: Dieppe, New Brunswick, is opening its inaugural Fricot Franco Festival with a free Wednesday Show at Place 1604. The city says Chris Belliveau and Jourdan Thibodeaux are scheduled to perform from 6:30 p.m.; the five-day festival takes its name from fricot, the traditional Acadian chicken stew made with chicken, carrots, potatoes and savory.

It is an agreeably specific premise for a civic celebration: a food whose ingredients are meant to work together gets a festival built around music, comedy and Acadian culture. The City of Dieppe lists the festival as free and open to everyone from August 12 through 16, with its opening concert at 333 Acadie Avenue.

The schedule gets more playful as the week goes on. Thursday’s program is a comedy night hosted by Rose Beef; Saturday includes a tintamarre parade; and Sunday is set aside for circus acts, a magician and family programming. The city also says pets are not permitted at the site, a small reminder that even the most festive stew deserves a little crowd control.
