Monday, October 12, 2026 — Waynesville, Ohio, spent Sunday giving sauerkraut an unusually broad job description: pizza topping, cookie ingredient, fudge flavor and a reason to gather on Main Street.
Today’s lead: Waynesville put kraut on the festival menu—and the scholarship ledger
The 56th Ohio Sauerkraut Festival filled historic Main Street on October 10 and 11. The organizer’s 2026 program scheduled the final day for Sunday, October 11, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; the local Waynesville News newsletter identified Sunday as the festival’s final day. A local television report published Sunday said thousands of people had filled the streets on Saturday.
The menu made the event’s name a full-service assignment. The official program listed sauerkraut pizza from the Order of the Eastern Star, sauerkraut fudge from the Waynesville Band Boosters, sauerkraut balls from the Wayne Township Fire Department and a German sundae from the Sons of the American Legion. Its other booths served cabbage rolls, Reuben sandwiches, kraut-and-mashed-potato plates and plenty of familiar festival food.

That lineup also doubles as a neighborhood directory. The program says local school groups, churches and nonprofits run every food booth, keeping proceeds in the community. Festival organizers say the event has funded scholarships for graduating seniors since 1970. On Sunday afternoon, the Main Stage schedule included the scholarship ceremony—so the sauerkraut had both a social calendar and a charitable giving plan.
The October 11 television report described returning visitors and student volunteers, and one visitor told the station the sauerkraut pizza was worth the wait. A vendor explained that sauerkraut helps keep the festival’s cookies soft and tender. That is the kind of ingredient résumé that can surprise a cookie jar and still earn repeat customers.
