Austin Makes Room for Music, Markets and One Big Grito

Austin has a community-sized plan for Tuesday evening: music, dance, an artisan mercado and one especially meaningful call that everyone can hear.

The lead: a ceremonial call meets a full park

The World Affairs Council of Austin says its Fiesta de El Grito de Independencia is set for September 15 from 6 to 9 p.m. CDT at Republic Square Park. The free public gathering is presented with the Consulate General of Mexico, the Austin-Saltillo Sister Cities Association, the City of Austin Economic Development Department and the Downtown Austin Alliance Foundation.

The evening’s signature moment is a reenactment of the cry for independence by Consul General of Mexico Humberto Hernández Haddad. It is the kind of civic call built for a crowd: one voice at the center, then music, dance, conversation and plenty of room for the whole park to carry the feeling onward.

Organizers also list an artisan mercado with arts and crafts from Mexico, making the program a lively place to stroll as well as a moment to gather. The warmest comic note is simply the scale of the invitation: a formal historical call, surrounded by the very human business of meeting neighbors, listening to musicians and deciding which market table deserves one more look.
