CLINTON, N.J. — The South Branch of the Raritan River had at least 1,000 tiny yellow competitors on its July 12 race card, and every one of them was required to remain the property of the Rotary club.
Clinton Sunrise Rotary scheduled its 37th Great Hunterdon Rubber Ducky Race for 2 p.m. Sunday, sending sponsored rubber ducks over the falls in a fundraiser for educational and service projects, student scholarships and community crisis needs.
The official rules made the sport reassuringly strict. Spectators could sponsor a duck but not interfere with the field; race officials were authorized to free competitors tangled along the course; and sponsors did not need to attend to win. The top duck carried a $1,000 Apple Watch and tech package for its human sponsor, an arrangement that finally explains why none of the entrants needed pockets.
