The calmest program on Sunday’s calendar had a very excitable title. Canaveral National Seashore’s Playalinda District listed “Manatee Mania” for September 27, inviting visitors to stop by Eddy Creek dock between 9 and 10:30 a.m. for a chance to observe manatees and learn from park staff.

A very gentle headliner on the park calendar

The National Park Service calendar described the program as an opportunity to observe manatees in their natural environment at Eddy Creek in the Playalinda District. Its September ranger-program listing gave visitors the same invitation, with a useful bit of comic timing built into the title: “Manatee Mania” is a tremendous amount of alliteration for animals widely known for moving at their own serene pace.

The setting suits the subject. Canaveral National Seashore identifies the West Indian manatee as one of the aquatic mammals found in the area and notes that adults commonly weigh 800 to 1,200 pounds while spending much of their time grazing on seagrass. That makes an Eddy Creek viewing program a fine place for a Sunday morning lesson in appreciating a creature whose big plan is usually lunch.

The program listing gave the morning a simple plan: park staff would share useful information, visitors could look carefully, and any passing manatees could continue being impressively unhurried. The event page listed an entrance fee for interpretive-program participants and directed visitors to the Eddy Creek dock.
